Swedish medical technology company SciBase Holding AB (STO: SCIB), which develops AI-based dermatology assessment devices, said on Thursday it will participate in a new study led by the US National Institute of Health (NIH) in collaboration with the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research.
The THREAT study will use SciBase's Nevisense platform and its Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technology as the primary endpoint to examine how environmental exposures affect skin barrier function.
The study will expose 80 healthy volunteers to common skin products containing sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), synthetic textiles, or pure contactants free of SLS, and natural fibres such as 100% cotton. Researchers will measure and compare the effects of these exposures using skin impedance as an indicator of barrier dysfunction. The method assesses opposition to electrical flow at varying frequencies to reflect the functional status of the skin.
EIS will be used alongside molecular, microbiome and inflammatory biomarkers to monitor changes over time. The study aims to demonstrate the scientific relevance of EIS as an objective tool for evaluating skin barrier function in dermatology, cosmetic research and product development.
