US plans additional donation of 500 million COVID-19 vaccines
22 September 2021 -

The United States plans to donate an additional 500 million COVID-19 vaccine doses made by Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) and its partner, Germany's BioNTech SE (Nasdaq:BNTX) to countries around the world, Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a source familiar with the plans.

This is expected to take the total doses the country is donating to over one billion.

Earlier on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden had told the United Nations General Assembly that the United States had put more than USD15bn toward the global response to COVID-19 in order to fund more than 160 million COVID-19 vaccines in other countries.

Reportedly, the US has already purchased 500 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and donated them through the global vaccine-sharing platform COVAX.

According to Biden, the vaccines have already landed in 100 countries. He is expected to announce additional commitments on Wednesday at the US-hosted global COVID-19 virtual summit.
