US to ship nearly10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to two African countries
28 July 2021 -

The US government will ship almost 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Nigeria and South Africa, Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday.

White House officials stated that four million doses of the Moderna (Nasdaq:MRNA) COVID-19 vaccine will go to Nigeria and 5.66 million doses of the Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) vaccine to South Africa,

Reportedly, the South Africa vaccine shipment is the single largest sent by the US since it began sending vaccine shots overseas.

These latest shipments bring the total number of US COVID-19 vaccine doses sent to Africa to 16.4 million.

According to one of the US officials, with this latest shipment to Nigeria and South Africa, the US will exceed the 80 million COVID-19 vaccine doses that US President Joe Biden had pledged in May 2021 to donate to countries around the world.

Also, in June 2021, Biden had announced plans to buy and donate 500 million Pfizer vaccine doses to 92 low and lower middle income countries and the African Union, but those shipments will begin next month, the White House official added.
