US authorises Siemens Healthineers' at-home COVID-19 test
30 December 2021 -

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency use authorisation to at-home COVID-19 tests from German medical device company Siemens Healthineers, part of Siemens AG (ETR:SIE), Reuters news agency reported on Thursday.

According to Siemens, the test, which is expected to be available starting January 2022, can be used for self-testing in people as young as 14 or adult-collected samples from individuals aged two to 13 years.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said that this authorisation was granted under the Biden administration's accelerated review programme that aims to bring tens of millions of new tests per month to the country.

It comes after several retailers limited sales of at-home COVID-19 testing kits after the spread of new variants led to a surge in demand.

The US government recently unveiled plans to buy 500 million rapid COVID-19 tests to be distributed for free to Americans who request them.
