Biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) (STO: AZN) (NYSE: AZN) on Monday announced positive high-level results from the SAFFRON Phase III trial, showing Tagrisso (osimertinib) plus Orpathys (savolitinib) delivered statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in progression-free and overall survival compared with doublet platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer who had progressed on Tagrisso and whose tumours had high levels of MET overexpression or amplification.
The combination's safety profile was consistent with the known profiles of both medicines, with no new safety findings. The global trial enrolled 338 patients across 230 centres in 29 countries, with progression-free survival as its primary endpoint and overall survival and objective response rate as key secondary endpoints.
Tagrisso plus Orpathys is already approved in China for eligible patients with MET amplification following progression on EGFR-TKI therapy. Orpathys is jointly developed by AstraZeneca and HUTCHMED and commercialised by AstraZeneca.
