Health care provider Northwell Health said on Monday that it plans to offer cardiology services at its new cardiac catheterization labs at Mather and Plainview hospitals on Long Island following clearance from the New York State Health and Health Planning Council.
Under the contract, the three Northwell Health facilities, Lenox Health Greenwich Village, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and Plainview Hospital will now establish cardiac catheterization labs to expand access to critical cardiology services in Manhattan and Long Island.
In conjunction, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco will open a cath lab in December upon approval from the NY state. The Cath labs specialize in using X-ray guided catheters help open blockages in coronary arteries or repair the heart in minimally invasive procedures.
The NY state reportedly requires the new labs to perform a minimum of 36 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) a year.
Additionally, the interventional cardiology programmes at Northwell performed nearly 22,000 diagnostic catheterizations and another 8,500 PCIs in 2019, led by the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in Manhasset and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. It fixes more hearts than any other health system in the state, from minimally invasive procedures to complex heart surgeries including transplant.
