India considers resuming COVID-19 vaccine exports soon with a focus on Africa
15 September 2021 -

India is considering resuming exports of COVID-19 vaccines soon, mainly to Africa, Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday.

A source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that this comes as India has partly immunised a majority of its adults and supplies have surged.

"The export decision is a done deal," said the source, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media on the matter.

"India wants to help out Africa with both vaccines and its COVID operational model."

India, reportedly the world's biggest vaccines manufacturer, had stopped vaccine exports in April 2021 to focus on vaccinating its own population as COVID-19 infections surged.

The Indian government plans to vaccinate all of its 944 million adults by December 2021 and has so far given at least one dose to 61% of them.

Before India stopped its exports, it had donated or sold 66 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to nearly 100 countries, Reuters added.
